The Business Card Reader by SHAPE Services has got to be one of the best application investments I’ve made in the last few months. If you are like me, you are walking around with 5-10 business cards at any given time. Generally collected over the period of a week or even at a single event, with every intention of adding them to your contacts or business address book. And of course, days if not weeks go by and your little tally of business cards grows and grows. This is where I found myself after a recent customer roadshow in Mexico. Besides returning with my allowed tequila ration, I found that I had accumulated a total of 45 business cards from key customers and business partners. Each card had notes, questions and follow-up actions but I found that after all the emails were sent out, the thought of having to type in information for 45 different contacts a daunting and potentially draining process. So the search began!
I’ve known about business card scanners for a while, but I wasn’t looking to purchase yet another piece of gadgetry to sit on my desk. I wanted something mobile, something that could be specifically used with my BlackBerry. The camera could be used to read barcodes, why not business cards? And I had to look no further than BlackBerry App World, which was great! I could purchase, download and install without ever putting my BlackBerry down.
All 45 business cards were scanned, saved and I even updated the contacts with pictures (where I could) in less than 30 minutes. How’s that for mobile productivity!
